Game Room Takes a Direct Hit

Well chalk up another item on the hailstorm damage list, this one however was much more insidious in its timing and execution.

The storms that hit the southeast, as you know by now, were pretty epic in scope. Dropping six inches of water on my speck of earth in less than four hours doesn't sit well with house foundations either.

So the corner of the wall outside where the chimney is washed away. The moisture barrier got decimated, and water just came on through where the floor meets the wall. The floor, and the padding underneath, became a giant sponge. I thought I had it dried up with towels, but after a couple of days the smell of soggy carpet could knock you down. I cut it all out and tossed it, that's the good news. More good news is that insurance will cover it...eventually.

That's the kicker, there's a lot more homes in so much worse shape than mine that the adjuster will be quite some time making it out. It's a minor inconvenience for me though, the homes that lost their roofs, windows, and the like need attention first. For the summer the game room will be a tad unsightly, but still serviceable! Until then I leave with you a parting "before" shot:

Ahh, better, drier times...

  2. Sorry for you. I'm sure forces of Chaos are behind that. The Imperium will prevail!

  3. Wow! Glad it wasn't something more serious. My adjuster is telling me it will be two weeks before he gets to my house, but I would think you would be a high priority than me. Also, talk to your insurance company, they will probably authorize temporary mitigation right away-- you just getting somebody, anybody, to keep from getting more water damage. You won't need to wait on the adjuster for that.

  5. Such a shame, sorry to hear that! No miniatures/books get damaged though? :)

  6. That is the suck! How much is it going to cost to fix? Is it enough to make it worth an insurance claim?

  7. @Chris: That's the good news, only the carpet was ruined, no books, terrain, or minis!

@Master Darksol: Well, I'm hoping it will, how's that?

@Kobayachimaru: If by Imperium you mean my flooring...yes! You're right!

@Andy: We have the same agent, just tell them to get over here first "cause we gots to game yo".

@Bill: Good luck chief, I'm not the world's handiest myself. Be glad it's just leaking, a lot in this area got shattered out.

@Oz: Well yeah I've gotta make a claim, there's structural work to be done on the outside and new flooring to go on the inside. Besides, it should all be covered under one giant hailstorm claim since it's all related. If we do get new carpet though you and I are going to have to have a little talk about what color beverages you're allowed to bring over!

  8. That is brutal. I'm glad to hear that insurance will take care of it. What a drag in the meantime, though.

  10. I wonder if I could make a claim for loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life?

  11. Sorry to here about your problem. You might want to open up the wall in that area to check if it got soaked also. Do not want a ton of mold growing behind the wall.

  12. @Andy: This is a big loss to the whole group! Honestly, the area where the table is was unnaffected, and the smell is gone too.

@Brad: Thanks for the tip, that would be bad, and I have allergy problems as is.

@Meatball and Christian: I am going into to it confidently about the insurance, I don't think it will be a problem, but we won't know until a person shows up with a clipboard.
