Thor's Day Hero: Maximillian
1979's movie the Black Hole has a lot going for it. If its been a while since you've seen it, I suggest giving it another go. Of all the goodness within is one very underrated "evil" robot, Maximillian. This guy was nothing but menace personified and he looked incredibly cool. He was big, but hovered, had whirling blades for hands, and was obviously networked into his surroundings. The "bad guy" of the movie, portrayed quite well by another Maximillian (Schell) was actually upstaged by this red droid of doom. He never spoke, but his mono-visor said volumes. The best part of the movie was the chilling, no-dialog ending where Maximillian seemed to be right at home in the center of the black hole itself.

Maximillian rocks! As a kid I remember friends and I miming the drill claws.
ReplyDeleteIs one of the last images is of the mad scientist living in Max's shell?
Yup, what looks like the landscape of hades we see Max standing there with what we assume is a fusion of man and machine. Pretty chilling cinematography.
DeleteI remember designing him as a villain for Traveller at the time.
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool, maybe it's high time he has another RPG incarnation?
DeleteI will track this down again soon, havent seen it in years. Anyone with whirling blade hands is pretty much destined to be diabolocal. Blades on their own can get you some pathos.. But WHIRLING blades are the exclusive domain of the unconditional badass.
ReplyDeleteYup. Blade hands. Check. WHIRLING blade hands, double check. Floating off the ground hoverbot even though you're built like a linebacker. Triple check!
DeleteTrack it down, it's worth the watch. It's a tad dated but honestly it holds its own quite well. I've got a copy in the movie collection here.
I barely remembered this movie. i remember cheesy effects, but the idea of entering a black hole just to see where it would take you fascinated me the most.
ReplyDeleteYou should check it out again, it's really not all that bad effects and such a side. Pretty dark overall for a Disney movie too.
DeleteOh yeah! That's why he was an early shoe-in for the Thor's Day Heroes!
