Less Than Four Percent

That's about all I've put into this place lately, less than four percent.  It's a darn shame really, I love my blog, I love my readers, and obviously I love all the things I do here.  So what's been going on?

This ain't no apology post, life gets in the way of hobbies, that's just the way of it.  Yes, I just used "ain't" too, I don't know why, it just felt right.  I have often seen blogs I follow post an apology that they've been away, or neglected their blogs, hey, it happens.  Without the real life stuff, the hobby stuff ceases to be.

I guess I've been tired more than anything.  I've moved from being a stay-at-home dad to re-entering the workforce so I find myself falling asleep on the couch with Supernatural on in the background somewhere around the 10pm range.

Boardgaming has supplanted a lot of the other gaming in my domain as well.  It's easy to setup, easy to cleanup, and provides a lot of fun in one evening that's accessible by everyone at the table.  I do miss the roleplaying though, however it's hard to get, err, rolling.  I do miss the miniature gaming too, and with a couple of games of Infinity under our belts I am hopeful that is going to rise.

There's also been a crazy (and sudden) interest in both Warmachine and Hordes, so I suspect a lot of content will start focusing (no pun intended) on those two games.  People have bought armies and started painting them and those who didn't buy anything have tons of stuff laying around from our first foray years and years ago.

I myself have thrown my lot in with the Trollbloods, starting over from scratch after selling off everything I had some time ago.  You'll see more of them for sure.

As for the title of this post, my statline so bluntly tells I've painted a mere 3.76% of the minis I've bought this year.  To be fair the Chuhuac 15mm figs and the Reaper Kickstarter have both inflated this number considerably.  This feels about like the effort I've been putting forth though.  All I can do is go up from here on in.  On a personal note I've just accepted a new job, this time getting me back in the classroom a closer reality than where I am now, and with a twist of synchronous irony, the hefty pay increase (37.73%) is strangely close digits-wise to my current painting percentage (3.78%), give or take a decimal point of course.

I'm going to give another nod to my friends, both Miller and Rucht for posting their guest spots Monday Night Miller and Friday Rucht Hour respectively.  They're not just guest spots, they're co-authors.  Without their fresh input things would be downright desolate around here.  My Thor's Day Hero posts are here as well, but remember I wrote all of those months ago.  So where does that put us?  I don't know.  I'm still here, hopefully you are too.  Here's to the future.

  1. The reaper minis do not count for this year. You cannot paint stuff you do not have. Just means next year will be low in completion percentage also.

I also have not played anything other than kids games recently and I doubt anyone is interested in a review of Disney Princess Yatzee. Hence only lego reviews currently on my blog.

    1. I kind of wrestled with that one. Both the Chuhuac and Reaper won't ship until 2013, true. However I did spend money I had now for them so it was kind of a grey area.

As for Disney Princess Yatzee...looks like at least one other gamer on this very posts would pay attention! There might be more of a viewer 'market' than you think!

  2. It can be hard to keep consistent on a blog, even if you are getting feedback from your viewers. A couple times I considered dropping it, but pushing through always gets to be a positive experience again.

    1. For the longest time I was doing just for myself it seemed, I had maybe ten followers, but it kept me centered. Plus, it serves as an excellent archive to boot. Dropping your site would be a shame, there's a lot of goodness therein.

    2. MIK,
I started blogging this past October. I do it primarily (99%) for myself to act as a diary of all the crap I geek out on. Your blog was very influential in my decision to start blogging since I enjoy it as much as I do. I only recently joined your blog ‘officially’, but have cyber-stalked it since May ’11 when I came across it searching for info on Project Deathrace. Thanks to your blog, and then the Minions podcast, I have been introduced to some great new games and then brought them to my group of gamers. Thanks for the blog. I just want to encourage you if you need it. Congrats on the new job too.

    3. Task8! Thanks for the kind words, I feel humbled that I helped to inspire you to blog/record your "geek crap" but I shudder to hear you listen to the podcast as I am personally much more explicit there than here, haha.

Finding your profile is easily done but what about your blog? I'd love to check it out if you could slide a link this way.

Thanks again, and congrats on your self-promotion from stalker to official reader!

  3. So What's the new gig, Mik?

Life is life and toys are toys. My own blog is not exactly spinning out content these days...

    1. I'll be a pre-k classroom teacher. The good news is it's at my son's school, so I won't be too far from him and he gets to ride with me to work every day.

I need to head over to Repple Depple, you've got some Saga posts I need to catch up on.

    2. Maybe a painting post or two. Haven't played a lot this fall - we bought a house here, so it's been a busy fall with the move added to the usual circus of kids and such.

Hope to have some more Saga stuff up soon though.

    3. I see what you did there, I'd have to actually paint something first! Actually it's a good suggestion, I've been lacking on painted-mini-eye candy as of late.

Bought a house? That's awesome news! I'll keep an eye out for more Saga goodness as well.

  4. Meh...

This hobby is measured in decades not days it always surprises me that we chose blogs as a medium for sharing given there "in the moment" feel.

I haven't updated my blog in several months which feels like blog death and my overdue next post becomes all the more difficult due to the time span but hey what's a few months over the space of near twenty years of indulging in little toy soldiers?

When you write, we will read and maybe even leave a comment instead of just habitually lurking ;)

    1. That's the thing, the longer I go between posts the more pressure I feel to get the next one out. That's why this one is kind of off the cuff, I just kind of said 'screw it' and started a stream of consciousness.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't eager for new Project Qalpha content though, your terrain is amazing and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's not blog death though, as you can see I can relate, just blog-meandering.

Great point about using our 'in the now' media to cover a topic that's spanned half of our lifetimes too. Very poignant.

  5. Its the time of year. I have a cold and working further away at the moment the traffic is a nightmare and driving in the dark with bright lights is making me just feel darn tired when I get home. Bring on the sunshine!

    1. None of that sounds appealing in the slightest. I've found a bit more of a drive on my hands as well and have turned to a Hordes Trollbloods podcast (The Scrumcast) to pass the time, it's been enjoyable so far. Better than talk radio anyway!

  7. Not a problem, real life does get in the way and sometimes a little funk too!

    1. I try to remain as funk free as possible, but its when real life intrudes that I get off-kilter!
