My Warhammer Quest

They don't make them like they used to. This post is about my copy of Warhammer Quest, which I'm happy to say this is the same set I bought back in 1995, and its grown since then. Back in the day, this was the only boardgame dungeon crawl of this level in town, and we had many, many 'beer and pretzels' nights with this one. Actually, WHQ action has even reached the blog a time or two, and that's going on a good dozen or more years after its release. I think that says a lot about its replay value right there.

Bunches and bunches of components are within

It comes with treasure cards but I've also got all three of the additionally released treasure card packs as well. These extra hundred and fifty treasure cards give so many more options for both dungeon room and objective room random treasures.

No other GW boardgame came with this many minis! Not only that, but these aren't cheap facsimiles of GW's regular figures. At the time, the figures that came in the box were the same plastic that you could find in the WHFB range too. A gaming buddy of mine, Raymundo, painstakingly took the time to paint these to boot.

Yes, even the bats and spiders are painted!

WHQ put the "tile laying" in "tile laying dungeon crawl"

Of course all of the above fits nice and snug into the main box. There's also a handful of rulebooks in there as well, one of which will take your basic heroes well beyond the first two levels and into much more advanced levels.

The game is now sixteen years old, to find one complete is getting to be more and more rare. If you can get your hands on a copy however, do so, the game is a lot of fun, and it hardly shows it age at all. If you know someone who has a copy collecting dust, get them to haul it out and give it a whirl one evening, you won't be disappointed.

I've bored you enough, so never mind the rest...

  1. Wow, you have the expansions too. I know those go for all sorts of silly money nowadays.

I never played Warhammer Quest, but I did play the heck out of its father and grandfather, the two HeroQuests. Both are now long gone, and I miss them, as they were great games.

There's a persistent rumour that WQ is going to get the Space Hulk treatment, and if so, I'll buy it in a shot, but I'm not holding by breath.

  2. Awesome post, I am working on building up a set of mini's and such to use with WHQ rules (which I don't own a copy of, but would like to)

Have you seen the "Living Rulebook" version? Looks pretty spiffy.

  3. I loooove the WarHammer Quest. And now I own my very own copy, thanks to you. As a matter of fact, I think we need to break it out again on our random game night.

  4. What a rookie mistake, my images were the wrong size! Everything's been re-sized and should look better now!

@KGreen: I'll be completely honest with you. This is more of an homage post, as I am currently selling it all off (I didn't want to use my blog as an eBay advertisement so I didn't mention it above). As for the silly money, let me clarify. It's *stupid* silly money, like, jaw-droppingly silly. I've also heard the Space Hulk reboot rumors. Descent is a good alternative but it's not really the same (though being in stock does give it an edge).

    @Tristan: Send me an email...

@Rucht: WHQ is a great game, relish your copy, keep it close, it is the original! In fact, I'm typing this on the computer you traded me for your copy!

  5. Ah, sweet nostalgia... I do miss that game. My copy and all the add-ons are long gone but for some reason I still have more than ten of the little spiders and a few bats, too. Those spiders are great, I know I'll find a use for them someday. Thanks for showing off the set, definitely brings back some fun memories!

  6. Please don't sell that! WHQ is the single best beer-drinking-stay-up-all-night-playing game ever!

  7. There are two on ebay at the moment that I can see... one going for £43 at the moment, the other for £143 O_o Makes me think about dusting mine off and finding all the models and listing them :oP

The best I saw was a third edition copy of talisman (back before they released 4th ed) that went, with all expansions, for upwards of £800. I was sorely tempted to list my copy of that then, but I didn't. Now I see it going for about £20 :oS

  8. @Oz: Sorry chief! Looks like it's Descent for us from now on!

@Ginge: I loved that old Talisman, it was a great game!

  9. You have no idea how jealous I am! I grew up playing a friend's copy but was never able to afford one of my own until it was far too late.
