Defining Game #3: Twilight 2000

3. Twilight 2000, 1984

So by '84 I was a ten year old, full into GI Joe figures ('84 being the best year for them) and Star Wars. I had some RPG goodness behind me already, not to mention this was the same year Red Dawn came out.

That's when I found Twilight 2000, it was all the roleplaying I had experienced to this point, plus all the guns and paramilitary action that was prevalent at the time. It was kind of the perfect combination at the perfect time.

Twilight 2000 also marks a first in that this was the first roleplaying game I began playing with friends on a regular basis where your character one week was the same one you used the next. This is where the beauty of linked games, a campaign even, began to come to light to me for the first time.

  1. Interesting, ive never actually heard of this one. Looks interesting, sort of a near future warfare rpg thing. What sort of dice system did it use?

    1. It still remains somewhat unique in its reality-grounded post-apoc world. It has been years but I only remember using d6s and d10s.

  2. I remember me and my pals fighting it out in our home town in a two year long campaign. We fought over the local Buddies grocery store for supplies, blew up Six Flags and Wet N' Wild, fought to occupy the local comic shop, rescued all the girls we liked from slavers and even blew the shit outta school in a full out attack on a Russian outpost. Twilight 2K was the game that really started me down the path to more complex and realistic gaming. I still have all my books and rules in my game closet just waiting until my little ones hit 12 and I can introduce them to the madness of Twilight 2K

    Fantastic game,

    1. Your first forays sound like a lot of fun! Why wait until 12 on the kids? Start some 'gateway' gaming now!

  4. I really enjoyed Twilight 2k but played the the second version more than the original. My favorite campaign I ran was when I was in the military and the we used the Merc 2k supplement. The funny part is I set the campaign in the far off year of 2004.

    1. I never had the supplements, but it sounds like I'm not the only one with fond memories of this system. So 2004 had power armor, jet packs, and flying cars right? That's what I was promised!
