Couple of Pickups

So one of our local game shops is closing down, mind you it's not the awesome one I spoke of before. It's also not the pretty good one that is close enough to ride my bike to. In fact, the store closing down is the one that price gouged Space Hulk long ago, so I think there's a valuable lesson to be learned here. But I digress.

So they're going out of business and selling off the store at discounted prices. Not having a whole lot of spending cash on hand, it was still too good of a deal to pass up on. Even though I vowed I would "would never spend another penny" with them, it was their swan song so I thought I'd help them along their way out the door.

One of my favorite games has got to be Race for the Galaxy, and though I've never won a game, it's still a fantastic, amazing game. Seriously, it's one of my favorite games. Anyway, I've had the first expansion (Gathering Storm) for a while but thanks to the sale I now have expansions #2 and #3, Rebel vs. Imperium and Brink of War. I'm pretty happy with these additions, and they add whole other levels to the game, kind of like adding Cities and Knights to your basic Settlers of Catan changes the entire game's scope.

The other item I picked up was on super sale. It's called Rush n' Crush, and from what I've heard of this game in the past, it's not half bad, but I haven't heard much. I'd love to hear what you might know about it, the price was just too good to pass up really, six bucks unopened. Apparently the game is a blast, but the components are a bit lacking. Having peeked inside, yeah, those are pretty cheap (and weird looking) race cars. The map boards look good though.

So there you have it, I've been pretty frugal as of late so it's not often I get to add a few pounds of loot to the pile. Enjoy!

  1. I take it there was a lot of discount?

    1. The whole store is at 40% off, which made the two RftG expansions after tax barely under Amazon pricing, but I'd pay retail for these anyway.

Rush n' Crush was marked down from $50 to $10, then a further 40% off of that. Even if I'd never heard of it, I probably would've blind bought it anyway. Having heard a good thing or two about it after all, even better.

  2. Race for the Galaxy is one of those games I love and hate. Solid design, but creates such immense moments of Analysis Paralysis, I've come to prefer any other game hitting the table now. That, and you can play the game in complete silence until scoring!

Have you tried Eminent Domain? It's a neat combination of Race for the Galaxy and other deck builder games (I'd call it a deck learning game) that plays really well...and has a few more interaction moments than RftG.

    1. Technically I should hate it, since I've never won a freakin' game! It does suffer a little from 'solo' play syndrome, but these two expansions do attempt to reconcile that shortcoming.

As for Eminent Domain, I'd never even heard of it until now. Thanks to you it's now officially on my wish list.

  3. Race is one of my favourite games for sure! Always fun to play. I'm looking forward to the next expansion as it takes the game in an entirely different direction.

Getting Rush n Crush for less than $10 is an absolute steal! Especially now since it's been out of print since Rackham went under. It's an excellent racing game with mines and machine guns on top and quick enough to play (depending on the course naturally) that you don't mind if your car overheats and explodes during the second lap. :)

I like the hovercar concept although the execution leaves a little to be desired. I recommend painting them as that makes it easier to pick them up.

I know I've written about it on my blog somewhere. Just do a search if you're curious.

    Now... start your engines!

  4. I wish I was there to cherry pick their FOW stuff (which was already 20% off last time I was there since they haven't changed the prices since the last time they added new stock back in 2008 or so) and to dig through their warmachine stuff... maybe add a few reaper figs to the "convert to Blood Bowl" pile.

    1. I had a pretty limited budget and had to show a lot of restraint. A LOT! I'm wanting to paint up some Hordes stuff (of which they had PLENTY Hordes/WM) right now, but I've got no use for it on the tabletop. I also could've just raked armfuls of Reaper figs into a basket, but I've got too much unpainted stuff already!
